LUGOFF, SC — Lugoff Elementary will delay its first day of school until August 22 to provide time for cleaning and air quality testing after mold was discovered here last week, The State reported.

According to the article, Superintendent Frank Morgan said in a news release that the heavy amount of recent rainfall created more moisture inside the school building.

“At the end of last week as teachers returned, we discovered areas of mold in several of the school’s classrooms,” Morgan stated in the article. “Over the past few days, we have worked with a professional cleaning company to address the problem but learned this morning that more classrooms are impacted than we originally thought.”

The cleaning company told the superintendent that once the problem is cleaned up and resolved, it will not occur again, the article noted.

The building is more than 40 years old, and events scheduled for this week will be rescheduled, according to the article.
