California’s newest gas fee

California —California’s new “cap-and-trade” fee, which adds approximately 10 cents per gallon of gasoline and 12 cents per gall to the cost of diesel, went into effect on January 1, according to an article from the San Diego Union Tribune.

The tax was instituted in an effort to fund global warming efforts, which the state has been focused on for years.

With gas prices low for the moment, consumers aren’t feeling the effects, but opponents of the tax argue that once petroleum prices rise again these taxes, which could fluctuate up to 50 cents, will pose an impossible burden on drivers.

California drivers already pay an average 76.87 cents per gallon in fees and taxes, the article points out.
