Mold grows rampant in New Orleans
Thursday, September 22, 2005
NEW ORLEANS — Unruly mold, flourishing throughout New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, has invaded homes and businesses and continues to be a major problem, USA Today reported Wednesday.

Hot and humid weather has caused mold spores to usurp the city, and even homes spared from high water are at risk after three weeks with no air conditioning, New Orleans Developer Carl Clayton said in the article.

Dave Keith, co-founder of K2 Environmental — a California company that specializes in repairing flood and mold damage — said in the article that houses with serious mold problems must be stripped down to the studs, wood must be sanded and then disinfected with a bleach solution to kill remaining spores, and then thoroughly dried with fans or de-humidifiers, a process that costs thousands of dollars and takes weeks to complete.
