MENLO PARK, CA — Facebook has announced that it will cut the number of unpaid posts by advertisers/ businesses that show up in users’ news feeds, according to a story from Longview News-Journal.

The social media giant is now warning advertisers that, if they want to be seen by users, they must pay for ads.

A new algorithm is being developed which will decide what content is advertorial and then limit its reach.

“Facebook is basically saying that their algorithm will be the arbiter of what’s promotion and what’s not promotion,” Jordan Bitterman, chief strategy officer for North America at Mindshare Bitterman, said in the article.

Facebook contends this move is motivated by a desire to create happier users rather than to boost the company’s advertising profits.

This is the latest change of several over the last year which have made marketing on Facebook more difficult.
