JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — A new indoor air quality improvement program will include removing all carpets and utilizing non-toxic cleaning products, reported The Birmingham News. According to the report, the program being implemented in an Alabama school district includes the following efforts:
  • All carpet is to be replaced with tile.
  • Stained ceiling tiles and flooring are to be repaired.
  • Air conditioning and heating filters – 6,000 in all – are to be changed four times a year.
  • A database will be created of repairs needed to correct indoor air problems.
According to the article, the IAQ program could also protect the school system from toxic mold litigation, which is on the rise nationwide, should Alabama health officials find a link between mold exposures and health problems. While most of the improvements are simple and require no additional funding from the school budget, others are not so inexpensive: The push to remove carpeting in 1,112 classrooms and offices alone costs about $2 million.
