Early registration extended for RIA convention

ROCKVILLE, MD — The Restoration Industry Association (RIA) has extended early bird registration for the 67th Annual Leadership Summit and Industry Expo.

Attendees who register before Friday, March 9, will save $200 off of the regular registration rate.

The RIA has also extended the cutoff date to book a hotel at the special conference rate; this new deadline is also Friday, March 9.

The 2012 Leadership Summit is building off the success of last year''s event, with more focused content that impacts your business, better networking opportunities and a bigger and better Industry Expo Hall.

RSA launches online training

BURLINGTON, WA — Restoration Sciences Academy (RSA) has now launched its online training program for cleaning and restoration professionals, according to a press release.

Located at, RSA Online offers courses on a variety of cleaning and restoration topics, including water and fire damage restoration and microbial remediation, the release stated.

According to the release, over the next few months, RSA will be adding many more topics, including more full-length courses that qualify for RSA certification.

"RSA Online courses are dynamic, interactive and easy to absorb," said Brandon Burton, technical education manager for RSA.

"They answer the need for quality education among restorers who can''t take the time to attend a traditional class," Burton added.

RSA Online courses are prepared by the same restoration experts and industry veterans that develop and teach RSA hands-on classes, plus several well-known industry experts on specialized topics, the release noted.

RIA and The Clean Trust sign Memorandum of Understanding

ROCKVILLE, MD — The board of directors of the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and the board of directors of The Clean Trust have approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will establish a working relationship between both organizations, according to a press release.

Under the MOU, the senior executive leadership of each organization will keep the other aware of applicable functions and activities related to natural disaster mitigation measures, indoor environmental issues and other issues of shared interest to increase cooperation and coordination between the organizations, the release stated.

According to the release, this shared knowledge will help RIA members and Clean Trust registrants provide leadership and promote best practices through advocacy, standards and professional qualifications.

"RIA is very pleased that our organizations have entered into this agreement," said RIA President Frank Headen, CR, WLS, CMH.

"The spirit of cooperation is already evident between our organizations and the recent changes at The Clean Trust will benefit everyone involved in the restoration, cleaning and inspection industry. RIA looks forward to working with The Clean Trust on a number of initiatives that will only serve to strengthen the industry," Headen added.

ANSI approves IESO/RIA 6001-2011

ROCKVILLE, MD — The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has notified the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization (IESO) of the approval of the IESO/RIA 6001-2011 Evaluation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Interior Surfaces to Determine the Presence of Fire-Related Particulate as a Result of a Fire in a Structure, according to a press release.

"The completion of this standard represents the efforts and expertise of many individuals, and we would like to acknowledge the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) and IESO Boards of Directors who provided the funding, leadership, staffing and guidance necessary to achieve this important milestone," said Brad Harr, chairman of the IESO Consensus Body.

This is the first ANSI-approved standard for IESO, and it was produced in close cooperation with a committee convened by the Restoration Industry Association (RIA), the release stated.

According to the release, the standard has been in development since early 2009 and will be used in the field to help determine if fire-related residues have been deposited on HVAC interior surfaces.

The new IESO-RIA standard will be available for purchase as a PDF and booklet in March, the release noted.

HydraMaster appoints director of sales

MUKILTEO, WA — HydraMaster Corporation has announced the appointment of Bruce Daw to the newly created position of director of sales for strategic and distribution channels, according to a press release.

Daw has been with the company as a regional sales manager since 2008 and has been a part of the cleaning and restoration industry for 23 years, the release stated.

According to the release, Daw, a graduate of Brigham Young University, started as a carpet cleaner and then worked for Bridgepoint Systems, where he worked his way up from store manager to distributor manager and then to national manager of company-owned stores.

"Bruce''s extensive industry experience and knowledge has been instrumental in helping us to develop an even more responsive sales team dedicated to assisting our distributors deliver superior product performance and support to the cleaning and restoration professional," said Mickey McKee, vice president of sales and marketing for HydraMaster and U.S. Products.

RIA announces Martin L. King Scholarship events

ROCKVILLE, MD — The 67th Annual Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Annual Leadership Summit and Industry Expo will take place at the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center and Hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, March 27-29, according to a press release.

RIA will be holding two special events at the convention, which will serve as fundraisers for the newly established Martin L. King Scholarship Program, the release stated.

According to the release, the Martin L. King Scholarship program will begin providing scholarships in 2013 to restoration professionals who seek to expand their knowledge of the different facets of the industry.

A golf tournament will be held on Tuesday, March 27, at the Myrtlewood Golf Club from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a portion of the tournament fees will go to the Martin L. King Scholarship Program, the release noted.

The RIA Awards Dinner and Banquet will serve as a tribute to Martin L. King and a fundraiser for the Martin L. King Scholarship program, the release added.

Connections pricing rolled back for limited time

DENVER — The 2012 Connections Conference and Exhibition is lowering the registration price to help the economy and the industry grow, according to a press release.

The 2012 Connections Conference and Exhibition will be held on May 3-5 at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater Beach, FL, the release stated.

Crosa to speak at the RIA Annual Leadership Summit and Expo

ROCKVILLE, MD — Peter Crosa will also be speaking at the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Annual Leadership Summit and Expo March 27-29 2012 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, according to a press release.

Crosa will also hold a pre-conference program called Finding the Profitable Adjuster, and present a session during a breakout group on How to Market to Agents and will be moderating a panel discussion titled Understanding the Mind of an Adjuster, the release stated.

According to the release, Crosa will be on a special end of day one general session panel called, "Closing the Gap: A Discussion between Restorers & Insurers to better Serve the Customer!"

In this role, he will write a position paper from an independent adjuster''s viewpoint, which will be part of RIA’s post-convention proceedings upload to their website, the release noted.

ServPro releases free app

NFIP renewal is a must

WASHINGTON — The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is set to lapse this spring; in order for its coverage to continue Congress must act, according to The News Star.

U.S. Senator David Vitter and Senator Jon Tester of Montana have called on Senate leadership this week to allow a vote on legislation, which would extend the flood insurance program for another five years, the article stated.

"Each time the NFIP approaches its expiration date, it causes a great deal of turmoil in the housing market because of the uncertainty surrounding the program. We can easily prevent this from happening," said Vitter.

According to the article, the NFIP was created in 1968 to provide affordable coverage; recent powerful hurricanes such as Katrina have pushed the program into debt, causing renewal to be tricky.

Chris Silliman receives 2011 DKI Spirit Award

WOOD DALE, IL — Disaster Kleenup International LLC (DKI) has announced that Chris Silliman, president of First Restoration Services of Asheville, based in Fletcher, North Carolina, was presented with the 2011 DKI Spirit Award at Insights 2012, the DKI Conference and Tradeshow in Austin, Texas, according to a press release.
