ORLANDO, FL – Carey Mitchell, technical director at Shaw Industries, announced today that the Carpet and Rug Institute is launching a carpet cleaning and vacuum equipment Seal of Approval program.

Presented at the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) Certification Council meeting, the new Seal of Approval is expected to be up and running later this year, perhaps in the second quarter.

Mitchell said this is the first program to define carpet maintenance product performance for users, and that only the best will pass the test.

The new program will utilize X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (click here for information on this technology) and measure small amounts of remaining soil to determine cleaning efficiency and ability of equipment – along with ensuring no texture or color damage occurs, Mitchell said.

Previous industry information has stated that installation was to blame for most carpet problems, but consumers (including commercial and residential) are reporting that carpet maintenance is the main problem, Mitchell said in his presentation.

Objectives for the approval program include:

  • Provide a platform for objective evaluation of materials

  • Establish minimum performance criteria

  • Provide means for users to select best performers

Accept and pay your quoted fee, allowing you to do your job correctly
Question your fee and attempt to reduce it, slowing down the restoration process
